Start a domain rotation

Start moving every mailbox on a domain to a replacement domain in the same workspace. The request returns at once with a rotation_id, and the rotation runs on its own.

What a rotation does

Every mailbox on the domain moves to the replacement domain and keeps its username. For example, [email protected] becomes [email protected].

Each mailbox keeps its password, billing and renewal date.

The old address keeps receiving mail as an alias of the new one.

After the rotation completes, reconnect the mailboxes to your sending tools with their new addresses. You can export them again with Export mailboxes.

Choosing the domains

Give the domain to rotate with domain_uid or domain, and the replacement with target_domain_uid or target_domain. Send one of each pair, not both.

Both domains must be in the workspace given in X-Workspace-Id.

The replacement must be an active domain with no mailboxes.

Domain names are not case sensitive.

How it works

Check first. Preview a domain rotation runs the same checks and changes nothing. If any check fails here, nothing is started and blockers says why.

Track it. Call Get domain rotation status with the rotation_id every 30 to 60 seconds until status is completed, partially_completed or failed. A rotation usually takes 5 to 15 minutes. When several rotations are queued for your team, later ones take longer.

It can't be stopped. Once a rotation has started, it can't be cancelled.

Safe to repeat. Sending the same request while that rotation is still running returns the same rotation_id with already_started: true. No second rotation is started.

If it doesn't complete. A domain whose last rotation did not complete can't be rotated again until support finishes it. Contact support and quote the rotation_id.

Limits. Up to 10 start requests per minute, and up to 20 rotations queued or running at the same time, per team.
